Smile Plastics – The Earth Collection
We are excited to announce the launch of our partner Smile Plastics’ newest material offering: The Earth Collection In contrast to...
Smile Plastics is dedicated to breathing new life into would-be waste materials. Their 100% recycled and recyclable distinctive architectural panels and aesthetic surface products contribute to the circular economy our built environment desperately needs as it transitions to a low carbon future.
Their recycled plastic products have a wide range of applications, from furniture to large-scale bespoke sculptures and surface finishes.
All of the materials in their Classics range are made from chemically inert recycled plastics, which means no harmful off-gassing.
The materials are easy to work with, clean and maintain, are food safe and 100% waterproof.
Since the 1970s, plastic has been the material that’s experienced the fastest growth in production.
The early 2000s saw a surge in plastic production; within a single decade, the generation of plastic waste rose more than it had in the previous 40 years.
Currently, around 400 million tons of plastic are produced globally every year. Less than 10% of that is currently recycled, with the rest often being incinerated or ending up in landfill.
The level of greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production, use and disposal of conventional fossil fuel-based plastics is forecast to grow to 19% of 2040’s global carbon budget. This is why plastic recycling solutions that are functional and fit for purpose are the key to helping solve our ever-growing plastic waste issue—which is where Smile Plastics comes in.
Smile Plastics takes pre- and post-consumer plastic waste and turns it into design-led surfaces that are non-toxic, durable, waterproof and closed-loop.
Thanks to Smile’s proprietary technology and processing, developed over 20 years of research and innovation, the polymers are not degraded during production, meaning that the boards can be recycled again and again.
The different types of plastic waste sourced allow for a kaleidoscope of unique colours, creating endless design options.
Smile Plastics collects many common single-use plastic items as raw material, such as yoghurt pots, bottles and medical packaging. In 1 year, they can divert up to 1,500 tonnes of plastic waste from being downcycled or sent to landfill.
Smile Plastics see opportunity in waste, re-using all off-cuts generated by production and offering their customers a buy-back scheme at the end of the product’s life.
Traditional plastic recycling shortens and disrupts the polymer’s molecular structure and often adds in lots of chemicals. The result of this is the plastic is degraded in each cycle, limiting its performance and suitability for repeat recycling. Smile Plastics’ processes do not denature the molecular structure – a perfect circular solution. The materials can be recycled over and over again.
