We are excited to announce the launch of our partner Smile Plastics’ newest material offering: The Earth Collection

In contrast to their iconic bold Classics Collection, the Earth Collection embraces the nuanced, intricate patterning found in the fine detail of solid natural matter.

The 100% recycled/recyclable materials are available in 6 colour options and were driven by a desire to celebrate natural surroundings in all their many facets, while encouraging a change in the perception around how synthetic materials could or should look. Mawn, Brecon, Slate, Quarry, Limestone & Grey Mist take their inspiration from the Welsh countryside, they offer a positive presence with the ability to work harmoniously and bring any setting down to Earth.

Smile Plastics co-director, Rosalie McMillan, explores the vision behind this collection.

“Like our belief in celebrating imperfections, each recycled plastic surface tells a story of transformation. These stories are woven into the hues of Mawn, the calm balance of Brecon, the nod to our heritage in Slate, Quarry, Limestone, and the poetic mysticism of Grey Mist; all showcasing the nuanced charm of the Welsh landscape. By incorporating these surfaces, you not only bring nature indoors but also contribute to a healthier, circular manufacturing process – a crucial step for our built environment’s sustainability.”

Preserving Heritage, Embracing Sustainability: The Berwick Street Refurbishment

IMPACT: 64 m2 HONEXT® BOARDS = 460 kg RESCUED WASTE

Discover the transformative refurbishment and extension project at Berwick Street, a location steeped in history and cultural significance in London’s Soho. Commissioned by Shaftesbury Capital, the goal was to breathe new life into a pair of Grade II listed townhouses that had evolved over the years.

Embracing the RE:LOW principles of sustainability, reuse, and historical connection, the project involved removing non-original finishes, restoring original features, and introducing recycled materials to preserve the heritage of the buildings.

In collaboration with Shaftesbury Capital, Studioshaw selected the HONEXT® Board for this project.

CASE STUDY: WHEN CLASSIC MEETS INNOVATION

The objective was to create a warm, textured wall finish using the innovative HONEXT® Board as a contemporary interpretation of Georgian panelling.

For an in-depth understanding of the meticulous process behind the HONEXT® Board and its precise installation embodying the RE:LOW principles, delve into the full case study on HONEXT®’s website.

Discover the protective coating with 0% VOC coloured wood oil, and the careful selection of sustainable materials allowed the obtention of this finish.

Read the complete case study to unravel the full story of this remarkable project and gain insights into the innovative HONEXT® process.

Using the Classics range, it is possible to create bespoke panels to suit your design needs.

Whilst there are some constraints in the visual language and patterns that we can produce with our raw materials and unique processes, there is real freedom to play with colours, patterns and styles based on your mood board.

Originating materials used in past projects include CDs, banknotes, wellies, electric cabling, Christmas decorations, toys, papers, plastic straws, wood shavings, coffee grounds, foliage, and marine litter. Note, we can’t work with heavily contaminated waste or metals.

The One Nine Elms material passport pilot scheme was introduced in November 2021 to trial material passports on a live site. Aiming to gather data to help in measuring the future circular signature of buildings, the passports covered carbon footprint, degree of circularity, material health indicators and residual economic value. Designed to bridge the information gap that prevents effective reuse, the pilot scheme was a UK first.

Working with main contractor Multiplex, developer R&F Properties, specialist sub contractor Chiltern Contracts and platform provider Upcyclea we generated passports across a range of key products, working with supply chain partners to obtain the information directly from the manufacturer where possible, and using generic sources where this information was not readily accessible.

The trial successfully identified a series of critical barriers to material passport implementation and has formed the basis for developing material passport protocols for future projects. The findings and analysis provides effective strategies and ‘best practices’ to be mindful of in deploying material passports.
